Rebuilding the Shield

Fixing this vulnerability requires a complete paradigm shift in how European nations view low-altitude security. Traditional air defense thinking must give way to distributed, tactical defense networks integrated directly into local border guard and police units.

The solution is not more F-35 fighter jets patrolling the stratosphere. The answer lies in thousands of inexpensive, networked acoustic and optical sensors deployed along forest tracks and border posts, backed by mobile anti-drone teams equipped with portable directional jammers and net guns.

Responsibility must also be pushed downward. Local commanders need the legal authority to neutralize threats immediately without waiting for clearance from distant national capitals. Rules of engagement must adapt to the reality of asymmetric warfare, recognizing that a persistent airspace violation by an unidentified drone in a sensitive zone justifies immediate electronic or kinetic neutralization.

Defense ministries are slowly waking up to this reality, funneling emergency funds into counter-unmanned aerial systems procurement. Yet procurement takes time, and the gaps remain wide open. Until these distributed layers are fully funded, manufactured, and deployed across every mile of the frontier, the low-level hum of foreign rotors will continue to test the patience, readiness, and unity of the alliance.
